Representations in The Suffragette trailer

In the Suffragette trailer men are represented as very dominant. “If we allow woman to vote there will be a loss in social structure” From that piece of Diegetic sound it suggests that Woman were looked down upon and that men were superior. In the mise en scene there was a low angled shot looking up at a factory owner making him seem more powerful as he watched the woman work. This reinforces the stereo types because men are usually seen to be Dominant. The ideology is that men are typically in control but are now being challenged.

Also in the trailer women are represented as determined and Strong willed. A quote to back this up is “We will win” and “Never give up the fight” this diegetic sound connotes that the women are not as weak as the men think they are. This is a positive reinforcement. The mise en scene shows close up of Careys face as a tear rolls down her check whilst being interrogated. They meet up in secret which suggests that they might be scared of the men. By the women being represented as determined and strong willed it subverts gender stereo types because woman are typical portrayed as vulnerable ,dependent and subservient. Meaning their purpose is just to cook clean and serve men’s needs. This film is for a mass audience from the age 14 upwards, and I would say 60% of the audience are female and they would route for the suffragettes and get behind them right from the beginning.  The target audience is also for reformance people. Feminists will agree and support this representation.

From the very start of the trailer we can see that women are represented as violent and aggressive towards the men. The ideology for this is that women can be violent for a cause, and in this case they were standing up for their rights. A quote that shows the violence is “We break windows, bomb letterboxes and smash things”, because “war is the only language men listen to”  A panning shot was used to show the women causing havoc. This connotes that they are desperate. They have realised that peaceful protest can’t work all the time so they have to stoop to their level. This subverts gender stereo types because women are rarely seen or shown to be violent or to break the rules which can be seen as a negative reinforcement. Another quote from one of the suffragettes, “All my life I have been ridiculed, battered and ignored. This suggests that they are tired of being the victim and they want to fight back. They see themselves as soldiers.

Lastly men are represented as Violent and intimidating which reinforces stereotypes as men are well known for being the most aggressive and manipulative between both genders. Male viewers might agree with that ideology but some might take offense as this is a negative message. A minute into the trailer is shows a mid shot of police men attacking the female protesters. At 1 minute and 50 seconds into the trailer you see a man on a horse hit a woman round the head with a stick which connotes how brutal things got. “punish those responsible, whatever way you can”

Overall both genders can be seen in a positive and negative way and there are few examples where it subverts gender stereotypes. E.g. women fighting back and showing that they can be daring and aggressive.
